Lyman Beecher was born at New Haven, Connecticut, United States, on the 12th of October ; the son of David Beecher, a blacksmith, and Esther Hawley Lyman. He was a descendant of one of the founders of the New Haven colony. After his mother's death he was committed to the care of his uncle Lot Benton.
